“Neoteric: The New Avant-Garde” Show Opening at GWC Art Gallery

“Neoteric: The New Avant-Garde”

January 24 – February 23, 2019
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 31, 2019

Huntington Beach, Calif. — “Neoteric” brings experimental practices in art together to celebrate color with avant-garde concepts to add energy and whimsy to the practice of art making. This exhibition combines the genius of local Southern California fiber artists, photographers, sculptors, illustrators, designers, and painters to explore new media through their experimental practices. This exhibition highlights the compelling underground art movements taking place all around us yet seemingly hidden from mainstream art world.

Through a variety of immersive site-specific installations playing with materials and color, the GWC Art Gallery is transformed with the help of such monumental artists as Olga Lah, Mimi Haddon and Chris Natrop. Creating a visual conversation between their respective works and styles, the main installations surround the space in color and light while the smaller artworks seem to inhabit this new space created by the dueling installations.

The photographs of Sarah Elise Abramson bring the human figure into this experimental landscape experience, playing with whimsy and the dichotomy of perception verses reality, while the fascinating crocheted fiber sculptures of the Threadwinners explores our greed and consumption with objects. Experimental painting practices of artists like Megan Lindeman, Quinton Bemiller and Caesar Alzate Jr. seem to bring the edgy and exciting installations to a halt as they quietly discuss the effects of color, paint and place, nudging our perception to its limits. Sculptor Andre Woodward’s brutalist living sculptures in the center of the gallery seal in the alien experience of this landscape, further pushing viewers to play and dream in “Neoteric.”

Exhibiting artists include Mimi Haddon, Sarah Elisa Abramson, Andre Woodward, Olga Lah, Chris Natrop, Caesar Alzate Jr., The Threadwinners, Megan Lindeman, and Quinton Bemiller.

“Neoteric: The New Avant-Garde” will be on view January 24 – February 23, 2019. Opening Reception: Thursday, January 31, 2019, 5-8PM.
